Tribocorrosion Course

Aim: In many engineering situations materials surfaces are exposed to the combined attack by corrosion and abrasion or other mechanical loadings. The interaction between mechanical and corrosive phenomena is called tribocorrosion. Tribocorrosion is found in a great variety of engineering applications such as valves and pumps for chemicals, biomedical implants, power plants, marine installations and many others. Tribocorrosion can not be predicted solely by considering corrosion and tribology (science of friction, wear and lubrication) separately but requires an integrated approach.

This course is intended to give to the participants (graduates, researchers and industrial professionals) a solid basic background in tribocorrosion. It covers the basic concepts of tribology and tribocorrosion, the description of the experimental techniques and of the existing interpretation tools and examples illustrating how to apply the theoretical background into real practice. At the end of the course participants will have the tools to identify and to approach tribocorrosion problems.

The course will be imparted by professionals from different backgrounds to cover the interdisciplinary aspects of tribocorrosion.

Who should attend : Corrosion professionals and researchers dealing with engineering systems in which wear and corrosion take place simultaneously. The course is suitable for those who want to expand their corrosion background to tribocorrosion and related mechanical aspects. Solid background in corrosion is a prerequisite.

Programme* : The course includes three blocks of lectures divided along one single day taking place the same Sunday Eurocorr 2017 will be inaugurated. The first part will be dedicated to introduce the tribocorrosion concepts (surface mechanics and wear corrosion interactions). The second one will be focused on the measurements techniques to evaluate tribocorrosion together with the theoretical tools for the results interpretation (tool-box for tribocorrosion). Finally in the third group of lectures, practical cases will be described and discussed.

Course material: Lectures will be based on specific chapters of the book “Tribocorrosion for passive materials” Ed. D. Landolt and S. Mischler, Woodhead Publishing, 1st Edition, Lausanne (2011). Lecture notes will be also distributed by the lecturers at the beginning of the course.

Venue and location: The event will be held at the University of Chemistry and Technology; Technická 3, 166 28 Prague, Czech Republic. The university buildings are located in Dejvice, close to the Prague Castle, and on the way from Prague airport to the city. Easy to reach by metro line A (green), same as trams and buses, as the campus includes metro station Dejvická.
